Blocked Drains Coogee

The streetscape here mixes older Federation and Victorian-era cottages with mid-rise apartment blocks built progressively from the 1930s onward.

That mix means drainage of very different ages sits side by side on the same block, sometimes on the same street.

Fine sand from the dunes near the beach can wash into drainage lines and pits wherever a joint has lost its seal, silting up flow gradually rather than blocking it outright.

Coogee Bay Road carries the main run of shops, cafes and restaurants toward the beach.

Coogee Public School, running since 1876, and St Brigid's Catholic Church nearby both sit among some of the suburb's oldest streets, a useful marker for how long some of this drainage has been doing its job.

Wylie's Baths and McIver's Ladies Baths sit on the cliffs at the southern headland, heritage-listed tidal pools that draw a steady stream of swimmers year-round.

The clifftop homes and older buildings around them share the same salt exposure and the same generation of drainage as the rest of the pre-war streets nearby.

Grant Reserve, the clifftop parkland containing both baths, and Dolphin Point at the northern end of the beach see a lot of foot traffic from residents and visitors alike, all year round.

That kind of steady use doesn't affect drainage directly, but it does mean any fault near a public amenities block gets reported quickly rather than sitting unnoticed.

The Coogee Bay Hotel has stood opposite the beach since 1873, which tells you how far back the drainage on these blocks goes. Pipe of that vintage is the earthenware we're usually called out to.
